TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Charlie
Crist on Thursday set the dates for elections to fill
the state Senate seat soon to be vacated by Sen. Nancy
Argenziano's departure for a position with the state's
utility oversight commission.
Crist appointed Argenziano to the Public Service
Commission this week. The PSC oversees rates and
regulations for the state's utilities.
Crist set the primary election date for June 5 and the
general election for June 26.
Argenziano is resigning from the Senate on Wednesday,
May 2, just two days before the end of this year's
legislative session.
The Republican primary may settle the election since
there is no Democratic candidate yet.
Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala; Rep. Charlie Dean,
R-Inverness; and former Florida House chief of staff
Richard Corcoran are campaigning to replace Argenziano.
Baxley and Dean will finish the legislative session
before resigning for the campaign.
Once they resign, Crist will have to order up two more
special elections to fill their positions.
Senate District 3 sprawls from Citrus and Marion
counties in the south through the rural counties west
and north of Gainesville to the outskirts of Tallahassee
and Jacksonville.
