Gov.
Charlie Crist called today for a special election in
June to fill the seat of state Sen. Nancy Argenziano,
who is leaving the Legislature for a seat on the Public
Service Commission.Crist chose June 5 for a special
primary election and June 26 for the general election in
Senate District 3. The 13-county district runs from
eastern Tallahassee across north Florida through Baker
County, and southeast along the Gulf Coast to part of
Marion County.
Argenziano, a Dunnellon Republican, was appointed to
the utility-regulating PSC early this week.
Argenziano resigned from the Senate, effective next
Wednesday, so she can be sworn in for her four-year
commission term the next day, the eve of the 2007
session's adjournment. The appointment is subject to
routine Senate confirmation.
On Tuesday, Crist appointed Nathan Skop of
Gainesville to fill another empty seat on the PSC.
State Reps. Charlie Dean, R-Inverness, and Dennis
Baxley, R-Ocala, are running for the Senate seat, along
with Richard Corcoran of Hernando, former chief of staff
to House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-West Miami. No Democrats
have filed yet but state party spokesman Mark Bubriski
said a candidate is being sought.
